The World's Best Kept Secret

By Anthony Warren, Advisor to General Hennies

Introduction

In the past few months Toby Warren has been calling and interviewing former students and graduates of S.I.I. and L.W.M.A. He is in the process of compiling what he has learned during the first phase of these interviews.

When Toby called and interviewed me, I was expecting his call. That was because I had heard from a few of the other alumni he had already called. I had previously talked to Toby in person during one of MAJ Charles Livings recruiting presentations in Atlanta in July of 2002. Some of these comments from the alumni may be used in the recruiting efforts of LWMA, although I don't know that for certain.

During this stage of the interviews I e-mailed Toby Warren with some names and phone numbers of friends of mine whom I am still in contact with. I did get permission from those alumni before passing phone numbers along to Toby.

What Toby wrote back to me might be interesting to the entire body of alumni and alumnae. The below comments are complied from two notes that Toby Warren sent me. The first paragraph is from his first note. I thought I would use it as the entire text of this "Story", but after I received the second note from him I decided to use some of that note as a second paragraph.

We called 84 people at random. We learned volumes. Regardless of what we were told or what has happened to any graduate, every conversation was great. There was no measurement or any set criteria. We hoped that we would truly learn just how deeply people care about our school. I will say this to, you and many others are truly blessed to have had this school in your life. Regardless the years, what your diploma reads, age of person or current geography, there is a common theme felt by most nearly every person. I, for one, have gained a most valuable insight into the remarkable constant of good work done over many, many years by so many. I will say this Brian, Lyman Ward may just truly be the world's best kept secret and I do not overstate this. There will come a time when my notes may become a factor in our getting better. The process will continue during the winter and spring months. I would have hoped to speak directly with more than 300 former students, when all is said and done.

Those words I spoke to you were just the tip of the iceberg. Never in my entire life have I been as moved to learn so much in how one environment has been life changing for so many people. My notes are a pile high and I have every word, every quote, every thought that was conveyed to me on paper. I feel like I have a treasure chest full of gold pieces.
