Halloween at LWMA
or
Percy's Surprise

Story By Doc Sam Cawley (March 2003)
(LWMA Medical Officer and Coach 1975 - 2000)

I see that James O'Hara keeps up with our alumni page. Well his nickname from me was "Percy". For several years at Halloween Mrs. Turner the dorm mother of Foxtrot Company (Howell Hall) would take the cadets trick or treating. They would go to the SAI's (Senior Army Instructor) house, Col. Hovey's house, the commandant's house, and then to my house. Mrs. Turner would take them down by Dr. and Mrs. Ward's gravesite. I would dress up in black clothes with a black mask and lay down between the graves. When the cadets got even with me, I would sit up and moan. They would take off back to the barracks screaming.

One year Halloween came and I was sick. I could not stop coughing so I called Mrs. Turner and told her I could not scare the cadets as usual. Well, Percy O'Hara begged me to let him do it. I agreed and explained for him not to say anything, just moan. Well Percy did not moan convincingly enough. The cadets yelled, "F troop attack!" They broke Percy's glasses and bloodied his nose before Mrs. Turner could stop them.

I have many stories on how I used to scare the O.D.'s when they used to make their rounds after Taps.
