Col. Hovey's Problem

Story By Doc Sam Cawley (March 2003)
(LWMA Medical Officer and Coach 1975 - 2000)

It was back in the late 70's. Col. Hovey was dean and was stung by a bee just as school started. He called me at the infirmary and I carried him some liquid benedryl. I told him to take 2 teaspoonfuls every 4 hrs. I was in the dining hall at 12:30pm and saw Col Hovey walking down the back road like a Tennessee walking horse. He was really picking his feet up. His garrison cap was on sideways and he was giggling like a teenager on their first date.

After he entered the dining hall, got his tray and sat down, he was still giggling. He started having trouble finding his mouth with his fork. I went over to his table and questioned him about his medication. He told me was taking it just as I told him. I asked what dosage and he said 4 tablespoons every 2 hours. Needless to say he was snookered and I had to carry him home. However he was happy as a lark and all the teachers and cadets thought it was hilarious. Our straight-laced dean loaded. Col Hovey and I still laugh about that.
