I remember that every six weeks was a grading period. We would have an assembly of the entire school and Dr. Ward would stand on the stage and announce the names of each student who had an all "A" average.
The student would rise, go up on the stage and take a seat behind Dr. Ward after his or her name was called. This was to honor them for their good grades. But, Dr. Ward would not stop there.
He then went on to announce the grade average of all the rest of the students and would tell each of them to do better next time in no uncertain terms. I remember him pointing his finger at me and telling me in effect, "Mr. Kyser, you can do better! Please, do so in the future."
